CLINTON, DEWITT. [1810] Scion of a prominent Revolutionary War family. Served as a U.S. senator from New York, three- time mayor of New York City, and two- time governor of New York State. When he was mayor, in 1810, he and an exploratory party scouted out a path for the prospective Erie Canal. The Private Canal Journal, 1810, is taken from a detailed account he kept during that trip.
